Note from the President: Extending the
SOA
As organizations continue to seek ways to reduce costs while they simultaneously
deliver more capabilities, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) enjoyed a
substantial adoption increase in 2006. Companies are looking for simplified ways
to integrate siloed applications, leverage legacy systems with new applications,
and integrate more closely with partners, while also being more
responsive to business requirements across the organization. SOA is key
component in this endeavor.
Typically, the implementation of the technology components of an SOA is done
using standardized SOAP-based Web services as a best practice. Now that much of
this standardized plumbing is in place for early adopting organizations, it can
easily be extended to deliver new functionality available elsewhere on the Web
and provide access to valuable data that is external yet useful to the
enterprise. This standards-based, loosely-coupled approach provides an opportunity
to deliver more capability faster, by leveraging what others have already built,
at dramatically less cost than building it from scratch.
One of the keys to success is locating a source for these new extended
capabilities that provides a consistent user experience, regardless of the
functionality or data that is being utilized. Otherwise, an organization runs
the risk of creating a new set of integration challenges if they must adapt to
multiple service behaviors, business models, and implementations when leveraging
outside functionality and data, defeating much of the purpose.
Leaving this complexity to an external provider such as StrikeIron who
aggregates these data sources and related functionality and provides them
consistently from function to function and data source to data source will
enable any organization to extend, improve, leverage, and maximize SOA
implementations for reduced cost, better decision making across the enterprise,
and significantly improved responsiveness to customers.

Proto Builds Seven StrikeIron Components
Proto, an application for building "desktop mashups", is the latest partner to
integrate StrikeIron Web Services. With Proto, you can build custom work flows
to manage all kinds of data. For example, salespeople can import leads from a
data source like Excel, clean up and enhance the data with StrikeIron Web
Services (Address Verification, D&B, etc.) and then export the data into
another application like Salesforce.com. Proto already provides 7 pre-built
Strikeiron components for one-step web service integration with existing desktop
data. Checkout the growing list of Strikeiron components in the Proto Gallery
here: http://www.protosw.com/mods/lib/list?cat=55.
