Note from the President: Extending the SOA

As organizations continue to seek ways to reduce costs while they simultaneously deliver more capabilities, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) enjoyed a substantial adoption increase in 2006. Companies are looking for simplified ways to integrate siloed applications, leverage legacy systems with new applications, and integrate more closely with partners, while also being more responsive to business requirements across the organization. SOA is key component in this endeavor.

Typically, the implementation of the technology components of an SOA is done using standardized SOAP-based Web services as a best practice. Now that much of this standardized plumbing is in place for early adopting organizations, it can easily be extended to deliver new functionality available elsewhere on the Web and provide access to valuable data that is external yet useful to the enterprise. This standards-based, loosely-coupled approach provides an opportunity to deliver more capability faster, by leveraging what others have already built, at dramatically less cost than building it from scratch.

One of the keys to success is locating a source for these new extended capabilities that provides a consistent user experience, regardless of the functionality or data that is being utilized. Otherwise, an organization runs the risk of creating a new set of integration challenges if they must adapt to multiple service behaviors, business models, and implementations when leveraging outside functionality and data, defeating much of the purpose.

Leaving this complexity to an external provider such as StrikeIron who aggregates these data sources and related functionality and provides them consistently from function to function and data source to data source will enable any organization to extend, improve, leverage, and maximize SOA implementations for reduced cost, better decision making across the enterprise, and significantly improved responsiveness to customers.
