Note from the President: StrikeIron IronCloud
IronCloud is an exciting launch for us.
As our customers and fan base know, we have invested a lot of resources over the
years in building out a comprehensive Web services delivery infrastructure that
serves as the foundation of our Web Services Marketplace. This infrastructure
has many capabilities built in such as easy self-service provisioning for
service consumers, a redundant and load-balanced architecture, ongoing service
monitoring for performance and reliability, Web service normalization for
minimizing consumer complexity, usage metering, multiple protocol support, and
a whole lot more. We have been thrilled with the broad array of applications
from multiple verticals that utilize the rich set of data sources available
from StrikeIron in heavy duty production environments.
What our new offering IronCloud enables us to do is to expand the application of
this infrastructure beyond subscription-based Web service usage. Those who want
to leverage the same Web service delivery platform to externalize their own
data or services to the general public for use in applications, mashups, mobile
devices, and Web sites can take advantage of our "industrial strength Web
service onboarding" capabilities. They can have services live and available on
the Web for use in a very short period of time. This will enable waves of
innovators to build on top of the service provider's offering and deliver
valuable real-time analytics back to the service provider about that usage so
the offerings can be optimized.
Also, it will enable the publishing of "private services" where the same
architecture can be leveraged to publish Web services with access controlled
completely by the service provider, enabling service delivery to controlled
audiences without the development, deployment, and operational cost and
headaches this typically requires. Think of it as white-labeled Web services
hosting. The use cases here are limitless.
The timing for this Web service delivery platform is ideal as other application
development and deployment platforms (currently known as platform-as-a-service)
will require data to feed those applications that are sharing the
infrastructure of the Web "out in the cloud", and IronCloud will be the perfect
complement.
In the meantime it's a great way to outsource the business processes around data
and Web service externalization, enabling an organization to reach out to the
masses of innovators out on the Web with the data and business functions of
their choice.
