What is SOA?

SOA is an acronym for Service-Oriented Architecture. It is defined by the strategy of building an information systems architecture across a network (including the Internet) where all data and business functions are available as independent services without regard to the underlying technology platform on which those services reside.

In general, the SOA consists of a catalog of services that are available across an enterprise for use by various consumers in different ways. These loosely-coupled stand-alone services tend to represent business processes or provide access to various data sources both internal and external to an organization. These granular services can then be utilized by multiple parties in combination with other services to fit specific business needs of different parts of an organization.

This approach to information architecture ideally encourages reusability, reduces complexity, and speeds development in cost-effective ways. Recent case studies have shown that an SOA can help reduce integration, project, and software maintenance costs substantially, and hence is an emerging and increasingly popular trend among IT departments around the world.
